Mulanje Mountain and Thyolo Tea Estate
Mulanje Mountain is the highest in south-central Africa with an impressive 3000 meters above the sea level with the great rift valley on the southern side of the mountain with spectacular free-standing eroded mountains known as inselbergs whose unique geographical features inspired and provided a backdrop to J.R.R. Tolkien’s, the British author of an epic high fantasy novel “The Lord of the Rings.” Which was one of the best-selling novels at the time he visited Malawi in the 1930s
Mulanje and Thyolo is also know as the Shire Highlands and this is the country’s main tea growing district. The tea estate is part of the Shire Highlands heritage and they bring the landscape to life.
