Brief History of South Luangwa National Park
The Luangwa Valley has four designated conservation places, but The South Luangwa National Park takes the attention, obviously, it is the scenery it gives and the vast wildlife that goes unmatched. North Luangwa, smaller than the south is on the underdeveloped side but is precious in the African bushes. On the other hand, the Luambe and Lukusshi National Parks offer no safari activities.
Luangwa’s beautiful and indiscreet secrets are found in its bushes, giving the visitor a feeling of peace, excitement, and enjoyment altogether. The Park births, the now famous ‘walking safari’ which is pioneered over 50 years in counting by Norman Carr (Zambia’s well know conservationist). Take that nature walk of serenity and trail in the best places South Luangwa will gladly offer you. Around the forest and waters, the sightings of the leopards are rarely missed, not only the leopard but also a strong inhabitant of predators are spotted. In the waters, expect to see the likes of the hippos and crocodiles, Thornicroft’s giraffe and wildebeest are around the valley too, not forgetting the Birdlife, which holds over 400 species of them to be seen.
Chikunto Safari Lodge – South Luangwa National Park
Chikunto Safari Lodge is located in South Luangwa National Park, on land meandered by Luangwa River, as it situated right on the bank of Luangwa River. Chikunto is a traditional style property, easily accessible by road. This lodge is built with green canvas tents and plenty of natural wood, lending it the feeling of a traditional safari camp.
Chikunto Safari lodge has five safari tents, among them is a family tent that sleeps four. The accommodation is furnished with functional and stylish furniture, each room has an open plan en suite bathroom, private shower, twin basins, and flushable toilets. The main area at Chikunto sits on a raised wooden deck overlooking the river and incorporates a dining area, lounge, and bar under a thatch roof. For leisure and exercise, a nearby swimming pool is available with a counter-current system for those guests wishing to fit in some exercise
Day 1: Meet & Greet /Flight to Mfuwe Airport in South Luangwa National Park
When you arrive at Lusaka International Airport, you will be met by our representative, who will assist you with luggage and check-in onto your connecting flight to Mfuwe.
It is an hour’s local flight to Mfuwe in South Luangwa and on arrival at Mfuwe Airport you will be met by the guide from Chikunto Safari Lodge who will take you on a road transfer of about 1hr, check-in and relax. Enjoy the Riverview and some drinks from the bar, later dinner will be served then bedtime at your convenient time.
Day 2,3 & 4: Game Viewing activities – South Luangwa National Park
On these days you will start your day with breakfast followed by a morning activity which is either a walking safari or a game drive safari or (even a seasonal boat safari in emerald season) for about 4 hours returning to the lodge almost in time for lunch and free time to relax.
After your free time, enjoy the sounds of nature around you at the lodge, you will be served with afternoon tea/coffee with snacks and then depart for an afternoon/evening game drive, enjoy the afternoon game viewing and sundowner drinks then when it gets dark, you will be searching for nocturnal animals such as leopards with the help of the spotter with a flashlight and return to the lodge almost in time for dinner. After dinner, you can enjoy some drinks at the bar or the fire pit and retire for bed at your convenient time.
Day 5: Transfer to Mfuwe Airport/ Flight to Lusaka International Airport
Today you will have breakfast and depending on your flight time from Mfuwe to Lusaka International Airport, you will depart after a morning game drive. Arrive at Lusaka International Airport at least 2 hours before your onward flight.
