Lusaka & South Luangwa National Park,
Not all safari experiences are created equal
If you are looking for an expertly guided walking safari; an absorbing mix of tracking, stalking & observing Africa’s wildlife on foot – this is for you. Deb Tittle, one of Luangwa’s most experienced guides, invites you to explore the bush with her from Mapazi Camp in a remote and undisturbed corner of South Luangwa National Park – one of the most iconic wildlife sanctuaries in the world.
Walk the Luangwa game trails far from the beaten track
Surefoot Safaris operate exclusively from their tented bush camp, “Mapazi”. Nestled under mature trees on the banks of the Luangwa River, Mapazi provides an authentic camping experience with a few essential comforts. Walking with Deb you will explore Luangwa’s unspoilt wilderness; tracking big game, watching magical birdlife and uncovering some of natures’ best kept secrets.
Exploring the bush on foot promises a unique blend of excitement and serenity. You are intimately involved in the interpretation of signs and sounds; slowly developing your own tracking skills and an appreciation of how to best negotiate a path through Africa’s iconic big game.
It’s fun, absorbing and relaxing …….
Deb has a uniquely flexible approach to the nature of a safari walk; following each day’s action as it unfolds, she builds the experience around the abilities and interests of her guests.
Morning walks will kick off early to maximise the cooler temperatures when wildlife is most active – a tactical tea stop en route allows for rest and a good chat.
Afternoon walks will cover less ground enjoying the beautiful light before sunset.

Mapazi Camp- Surefoot Safaris operate exclusively from their tented bush camp, “Mapazi”. Nestled under mature trees on the banks of the Luangwa River, Mapazi provides an authentic camping experience with a few essential comforts.
The centre piece of Mapazi is our canvas Chitenje; the open-sided tent has been carefully assembled around the huge boughs of a majestic Sausage Tree to create a cool bar and comfortable lounge area.
The Tents - Mapazi comprises 3 walk-in (Meru style) tents each with views of the river.
Access to the tents is from both ends allowing a through breeze. The tents have large gauze panels for an all-round view and a shaded porch with seating area. A good night sleep is assured in our large beds with sprung mattresses and comfy pillows. Each tent has a private bathroom with flushing toilet, shower and basin (hot & cold running water). These are situated next to the tents and have their own river view.
Dining - Morning coffee and light breakfast is enjoyed on the banks of the Luangwa River as the sun rises. Our brunch or early lunch is served beneath the shade of a Sausage Tree. Everyone meets at the Chitenje for tea before departing on an afternoon walk. We dine in the Chitenje, by the camp fire or on moonlight banks of the Luangwa.
Safety - All walks are accompanied by an experienced, armed escort scout from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife. First aid kits are carried on all trips (whether on foot or by vehicle) and we maintain contact with our camp by shortwave radio. The camp has a full medical first aid kit and senior staff members are qualified first aiders.
WiFi and Cell Reception - At Mapazi we provide the opportunity for all guests to immerse themselves in nature for the duration of their stay. The camp is a Wi-Fi and mobile PHONE FREE retreat.
What to Pack? - The following are basic essentials: Comfy walking shoes, sandals / flip flops, a hat / cap, insect repellent and sunscreen, Binoculars (and ‘small’ camera), any personal medication, torch, a warm jumper / fleece
